An opera by Stanisław Monuszko

Soloists, Chorus and Orchestra of the Teatr Wielki – Polish National Opera, Polish National Ballet

The British operatic visionary, David Pountney, casting a glance at the score of The Haunted Manor that is entirely devoid of the baggage of Polish prejudices and phobias, shall endeavour to find a different key to this masterpiece. He will transpose the opera from the Sarmatian Republic to Poland of the interwar period, the moment of the first, euphoric gulp of freedom after a long time of the Partitions. At the same time he will construct a series of tableaux referring to the visual icons current at the time, drawn from Young Poland’s painterly images of Stanisław Wyspiański or Władysław Podkowiński. Will the proposal of the English director prove a long awaited skeleton key to the door of a modern and universal theatre of Moniuszko? Time will tell. (source: Teatr Wielki)

Cinderella - Polish National Ballet

A ballet by Sergey Prokofiev

Polish National Ballet and Orchestra of Teatr Wielki - Polish National Opera, Students of the Roman Turczynowicz State Ballet School and Extras

This is Sergei Prokofiev’s ballet in the best ever version which has enjoyed enduring popularity at the famous Royal Ballet in London for many years. It is a show for entire families and ever new generations. Grown-ups drink in the beauty of English-style classical dance and the powerful dose of satire with which Sir Frederick Ashton treats the two evil stepsisters (danced by men!). Special emotions are always felt by children as they excitedly follow the changing fortunes of Cinderella in the fairy-tale costumes and sets by the Dutch designer Toer van Schayk. We know how the story ends, but we enjoy revisiting it, especially when the storyteller is Sir Frederick Ashton - a great master of ballet narrative, a man with an extraordinary sense of elegance and humour, the greatest British choreographer of the 20th century. This is exactly the production that Wendy Ellis Somes, former star of the Royal Ballet, left us when she staged Sir Frederick Ashton’s choreography with the Polish National Ballet. Our company’s soloists add lustre to any performance with their beautiful dancing and acting talent. (source: Teatr Wielki)

An opera by Richard Wagner

Soloists, Chorus and Orchestra of Teatr Wielki - Polish National Opera, Dancers and Mimes

What a pity that John Barth has already used The Floating Opera title! It would have been perfect for Mariusz Treliński’s performance. Rain and draperies of real water whippping the flooded stage surface at Teatr Wielki - Polish National Opera, create not only a visual but also a tactile counterpart of the Wagnerian storm of passions. It’s as if the technical capabilities delineated nowadays the borders of poetry. Music, just as Boris Kudlička’s incredible set design, drowns the spectators in a tempest of operatic dramaturgy, taking means of expression from every genre and at least one of the elements. Land and sea, femininity and demonism, The Eternal Sailor and beautiful Senta capable of breaking the spell and thus liberating him, circle round and round in an emotional whirpool between the Scylla of the eternal myth and the Charybdis of its mocking travesties, only to sail out, following the master’s orders, into the pure waters of an ecstatic synthesis. An opera by Stanisław Moniuszko

Soloists, Chorus and Orchestra of Teatr Wielki - Polish National Opera, Polish National Ballet, actors and extras

In the race between the Achilles of actualization and the turtle of the national opera tradition the latter may have a chance. The old fashioned machinery of Moniuszko’s work liberates unexpected musical energies and due to its difficult genesis the seemingly simple story of a Tatra higlander girl in love, a gentry dandy seducer and his peasant rival reveals a potential of ambiguity and puzzling twists of meaning. In this imperfection posterity found some hope. This performance directed by Natalia Korczakowska explores these paradoxes achieving an astonishing effect of lining the Sarmatian-folk plot with the dramaturgy of modern motivations. This is something more from what we heard from the Polish rock bank Skaldowie: ”Hey, a sheepskin on the outside and an evening suit within“ – inside we find our present, at times aching, skin.
